SPORTS
Athletics
We cover a variety of sports, including hurdles, discus, long jump, triple jump and sprinting. Different year groups compete at different levels: First and Third Form teams compete in district friendlies whilst Second and Fourth Form teams compete in the County League. All teams, including Senior teams, compete in the District Championships as well as the Harrow School invitational meets. Open to all year groups.
Basketball
Basketball Club runs in the Autumn and Spring terms only. We enter teams from First to Fourth Form in local district leagues and also run social basketball sessions. Open to all year groups.
Chess Club
We have a weekly session for sociable play, and also a weekly competitive session. The House Chess Competition takes place over three weeks in the Spring Term. Open to all year groups.
Climbing Club
An opportunity to try a sport which builds strength and flexibility. All ranges of experience are welcome. Open to all year groups.
Cricket
These sessions support the development of players in the close season (Spring Term) and during the competitive season (Summer Term). Sign up to winter nets is via SOCS in the Spring Term. Places are limited and a rotation ensures availability for all interested pupils.
Cross Country
This club runs after school alongside the option in Games. Competitive opportunities to run are available across the first two terms in this historically important and successful sport for the School. Open to all year groups.
Dedicated Athlete Scheme
The Dedicated Athlete Scheme is designed to support any pupil who wishes to improve their performance in sport. We offer training programmes, seminars on performance principles, and opportunities to earn further rewards with high levels of commitment to any pupil who is willing to commit to at least one training session a week in their own time, and attend four online seminars during the year. A series of seminars and resources are available to pupils in this scheme to support their sporting development. Open to all year groups.
Fencing
Available to all levels, fencing is a popular and highly successful sport at St Albans School. Sessions are run by the Paul David Fencing Academy in St Albans and we are currently the Public Schools’ Champions. Come along and get involved in this enjoyable and highly engaging activity.
Fitness
The fitness facility in the Sports Centre is available to pupils for personal workouts after school every day; for Dedicated Athlete Scheme members at lunch times; and for team fitness sessions as part of the weekly schedule.
Fit Fun Fridays
A range of fun sporting activities in the Sports Hall to promote health and fitness through fun activities and exercise. Open to all year groups.
Football Club
For First and Second Formers, Football Club runs in the Autumn and Spring terms, giving pupils an opportunity for unstructured play. Teams only play in the District Cup at this age.
Third and Fourth Formers enjoy social football in the Autumn Term and play competitive fixtures in the Spring Term every Saturday, as well as District Cup matches midweek.
Fifth Form and above have a training session every Tuesday for the first two terms with matches in the County League, County Cup, District Cup and ISFA matches.
Girls' Lacrosse
Whether you are keen on being a team player or simply want to learn the game, Lacrosse is offered during the Spring Term. We take part in regular fixtures and tournaments, with training taking place during the week and matches on weekends.
Girls' Netball
Netball is the main Girls’ sport during the Autumn Term. All players are welcome to take part regardless of ability level. Regular fixtures are arranged for those who are keen to take part at a competitive level.
Girls' Rugby
The opportunity for girls to play Rugby happens during Games lessons and after school sessions. Variations are offered to accommodate the interests and ability level of all, so come along if you are interested in learning more about the game.
Hockey
Hockey takes place at Woollams after school during the Autumn Term for all enthusiastic First to Third Form pupils who are keen to play and learn. All levels welcome.
Improvers Swimming
A great opportunity for First to Fourth Form swimmers to build confidence and develop technique in a relaxed, supportive environment. Whether you're looking to improve your strokes, dives or turns, come along and make progress at your own pace.
Indoor Games
A fun and active club for Third and Fourth Form pupils on Wednesdays, focused on offering engaging activities like Nerf Wars and Dodgeball. Spend time with like-minded classmates in a relaxed, social setting.
Performance Sports Groups
These operate in our major sports to support the talent and skill development of the athletes who have shown the greatest potential in these sports. These are invitation-only groups (Fourth Form to Sixth Form) in athletics, cricket, girls’ sport, hockey, rugby, swimming and tennis out-of-season.
Rugby and Rugby 7's
In the Autumn Term, weekly training sessions are run for all. During the Spring Term, there is a session for First and Second Formers, and another for Third Form upwards. Sessions are designed to introduce rugby to newcomers and prepare team players for fixtures.
Shooting
Fancy the chance of shooting in our state-of-the-art shooting range in the Corfield Building? If so, this is just the club for you, regardless of age or ability.
Strength Training
Strength Training Club provides an inclusive and supportive training environment for all those interested in becoming stronger versions of themselves. Pupils learn to safely perform the three main lifts: squat, bench press and deadlift while learning the basics of exercise science such as the fitness-fatigue model, biomechanics and programming. Open to all pupils in Fourth Form and above regardless of strength level.
Swimming (Autumn and Spring Term)
Whether you’re a team swimmer or a beginner, the swimming pool is open throughout the year for those who want to swim for the School, improve their ability or just to have some fun. Open to all year groups.
Tennis
Tennis training is open to all in the Summer Term after school and on Fridays. A social tennis ladder operates to encourage participation at all levels and abilities.
Water Polo Club
This club runs each term for pupils who are enthusiastic about learning a new game or improving their swimming endurance and confidence. Open to all year groups.
