A visit to Parliament
A robust cohort of Politics students made their way to London to visit all three branches of government for the UK. Tours of Downing Street and Whitehall were followed by a visit to the Supreme Court where students were asked to make a judgement over a real case, learning how the court settles matters of civil rights and individual freedoms. Later on, a tour of Parliament beckoned that took students through the palatial Royal chambers, the roomy red benches of the House of Lords and the worn ones of the House of Commons. Students also enjoyed a student-led debate to learn the process of how a bill becomes law. The trip exceeded last year’s expectations of seeing the powerful and famous; the figure of former PM, Boris Johnson loomed large, but nothing could prepare for an interruption of the motorcade bearing King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla through our very paths as they made haste from a pre-coronation engagement at Parliament.
