Last Friday we met Dr Helen Jane Fraser, and she taught us about the cosmic chemical cauldron. First, she talked about how clouds collapse against their gravitational pull, that proto-stars are like big, squashed hydrogen balls and that the sun is a third-generation star because it has died and came back to life three times. Then she talked about how Hydrogen and Helium were in space before the big bang and that all the other elements are made from bits of stars. Also, she told us that Iron is known as a Star Killer and that it is the last element that can be made through fusion. Finally, she gave us some fun facts like that it is -263 degrees in space and that an interstellar dust grain is 60 times smaller than a width of hair. Overall, she was very good, and I found her very interesting.
