The Senior House Drama competition requires students to create 10-15 minute short plays in a matter of hours, which is no easy feat. This year, Ms Hanneghan-Birt chose the painting Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion’ by Francis Bacon (1944) as the stimulus material. After only a few hours of collaboration, the Houses produced a range of stylised pieces utilising techniques such as multi-role, breaking the fourth wall and placards. Topics and themes included survival, punishment, crime and judgement.
Hawking were the victors with their piece Twenty Thirty Two, beating Marsh by just one point! A bittersweet result for Marsh knowing that they would have tied for first place, had they not lost a point for being under time.
The best actor award went to our new Head of School, John-Ellis, for his nuanced performance, with judge Lizzie Buckingham commenting on his skill of knowing when to hold back with the delivery. The students did a superb job remembering so many lines and cues and there was a competitive yet supportive atmosphere across the day.
