Sixth Form Geography pupils had the opportunity to visit the Azores – a volcanic archipelago right in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean – for a 6-day exploration trip during Half Term. The pupils had a wonderful time hiking around huge volcanic craters and exploring hollow lava tubes which followed the underground route magma had travelled in previous eruptions. They had a lunch cooked by geothermal energy and tried Azorean pineapples – the sweetest variety grown anywhere in the world. They also (on more than one occasion!) swam in hot springs, climbed waterfalls and watched in awe as 20-foot waves crashed into the rugged coastline, bringing with them the infamous Portuguese Man-of-War jellyfish.
One evening, the group battled it out to be the Atlantic bowling champion, and on their final evening they had the opportunity to swim in the marina, which was a fantastic end to the trip. Miss Whitfield and Mr Orme would like to thank the students for their enthusiasm and Mr Longworth and Miss Michell for their support.
