LOWER SIXTH FORM ENRICHMENT LECTURES
For our first enrichment lecture, Yogita Deogan delivered a fascinating talk on the global evolution of cricket.Yogita spoke about entering the sport as a young South Asian girl, and its beginnings as a quintessentially British gentlemen's game and how, through colonialism, cricket spread across the globe to become the second most popular sport worldwide (after football).
The public learns about climate change from a variety of sources, some more and some less reliable than others. In this lecture, Lower Sixth Form pupils learnt about climate change directly from a climate scientist, Professor Paul Williams. Paul explained how research papers are often wrongly summarised in press releases, and how important it is to listen directly to researchers, over Governments and media outlets.
Olivia Herries (OA 2022) delivered a hard-hitting talk on the meat and dairy industry, sharing her view that there are moral double-standards in the treatment of cats and dogs in comparison to pigs and cows.
She also discussed the immense environmental impact of animal farming and argued that becoming vegan or adopting a more plant-based lifestyle was the most effective way to tackle the climate crisis on an individual lifestyle level.
