EXPLORING THE LITERARY SOCIETY
LitSoc - our Literary Society - is open to all pupils interested in learning about classic texts beyond the curriculum. Most recently, pupils have been reading The Poetic Edda, a collection of narrative poems of Norse-Icelandic mythology which inspired Tolkien's naming of his dwarves in The Lord of the Rings, and Milton's description of Pandemonium, the capital of Hell, in Paradise Lost.
Throughout the rest of the year pupils have been looking at the Beat Poets, the New York School of Poetry, the Confessional Poets, and Christina Rossetti's Goblin Market.
Literary Society members also enjoy trips, such as a visit exploring the treasures of the British Library. From Chaucer to Sylvia Plath, the Magna Carta to Shakespeare's First Folio, pupils have been introduced to some of the most famous texts and books in the world.
Books are a uniquely portable magic.
