SCULPTURE ARTIST TALK AND WORKSHOP
Our Fourth Form artists took part in an illuminating talk and workshop led by sculpture artist Rebecca Griffiths.
Rebecca discussed her recent artists' residency, the concept behind her latest exhibition - a collection of sculptures created to look like leftover pieces of a future apocalypse - and the process of creating her moulds, sculptures and glazes. Even the glaze-making is an artform, with Rebecca's homemade glaze becoming one of her trademarks. When she lends her glaze to other sculpturers they are essentially amalgamating her art into their creation.
Making a glaze is like toxic baking.
In the workshop, pupils first created clay moulds and experimented with different ‘found’ materials to leave organic and inorganic imprints in the clay.
These moulds were then filled with a liquid white plaster mix which hardened inside the moulds, creating a sculpture from the negative space of the mould.
