UPPER SIXTH FORM ENRICHMENT LECTURES
Every Friday the Upper Sixth Form are treated to an Enrichment lecture, intended to expand their horizons and learn more about the world beyond their curriculum.
For the first Enrichment lecture of the year, the School welcomed author Dr Alex Ntung who spoke about growing up in the Democratic Republic of Congo and moving to Britain as a refugee. His talk covered many interesting topics, including the links between colonialism and tribalism in Africa and the concept of ‘Ubuntu’, as well as his work as a consultant for the UK Foreign Office.
Our second talk was given by Mr Tom Young, our Director of Music and an avid Stanley Kubrik fan. His talk explored the life and legacy of Kubrik, and broke down the innovation behind films such as Paths of Glory (early use of close-up immersive shots), The Shining (early use of the new steady cam for tracking shots) and 2001: A Space Odyssey (creation of a huge rotating set).
Nurse Jemma delivered today's enrichment lecture on ‘Fertility, Pregnancy and Abortion - the Facts and Arguments'. Her engaging talk explored the pupils' preconceived ideas about pregnancy and infertility (gauged from a short survey before the talk), and explored the likelihood of pregnancy and the causes of infertility.
