CELEBRATING LANGUAGES
We've had a double whammy of Deutsch learning as our A Level and Third Form Germanists go on two trips to the Goethe Institute.
The Third Form completed a digital quiz, interacted with a German speaking robot, explored the life of Kafka. The day was rounded off with a film screening of Der ganz grosse Traum, a German film that tells the story of an English teacher who brings football to Germany in the 19th century, exploring how language learning can be facilitated through sports and friendship.
Our Sixth Formers on the other hand stepped it up several gears and worked on translating the first paragraph of Kafka's Metamorphosis!
We recently welcomed pupils from several local schools, alongside our own A Level linguists, to enjoy a Languages Fair lead by Dr Cathy Hampton of the University of Warwick.Pupils enjoyed a brief introduction on the importance of Languages (with a capital 'L') as a course of study, broke out into taster sessions of cultural analysis and beginner Japanese, and spoke with current university students about their experiences of studying a language and living abroad. We also welcomed back Finn Durkan-Mills (OA 2020), Will Brown (OA 2019) and Tomas Hill Lopez Menchero (OA 2016) to speak about how learning languages has aided them so far, from careers in law to sports journalism for The New York Times!
Earlier this month, our Library was transformed into a lively multilingual hub! Pupils stopped at different tables to learn a phrase in another language from teachers and fellow pupils, with languages including Finnish, Mandarin Chinese, Czech, Yoruba, Dutch, Punjabi, Swedish and Italian, plus several more.
For each phrase learnt, pupils collected points for their respective Houses, with Hawking House declared the winner!
