JOHN MEULKENS MUSIC SCHEME

Founded in 2023, the John Meulkens Scheme is designed to encourage pupils to learn some more unusual instruments. It is part of the legacy left by the late John Meulkens (OA 1935) who had a great love for music, and whose generosity opens doors for Lower School pupils to borrow an instrument for a year, and enjoy a term of free lessons.

There are eight instruments to choose from: Oboe, Flute, Trombone, Tuba, Bassoon, Double Bass, Viola and the French Horn. One year after they started, we've asked some pupils about their experience of the scheme so far.

When I started the trombone I found that I could make a noise out of it immediately, but this could be from when I played tenor horn. After one term, I had just started a grade 2 piece and I wanted to finish it, this why I carried on playing trombone.

I have been enjoying learning the oboe, it has been a good experience. The teachers are very helpful and encourage me to learn at my own pace.

The start of the scheme was exciting because I was learning and practicing a new instrument. I am looking forward to carrying on playing the French horn in the future.
