On 27 January we marked Holocaust Memorial Day, a day of reflection and remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust. This year was especially significant, as it marked the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp complex, and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.
Pupils and staff were moved by the testimony of Peter and Moira Hart, who shared the harrowing story of Peter's mother, Kitty, who was imprisoned at Auschwitz as a teenager. Her experience in the camp, as described by Peter and Moira, serves as a powerful reminder of the dangers of hatred, racism, and prejudice.
This year’s theme, For a Better Future, encouraged us to confront historical injustices so we can build a more inclusive, compassionate world. The assembly closed with pupils lighting candles in remembrance of the Holocaust, as well as victims of genocides across the globe: those in Bosnia, Cambodia, Darfur, and Rwanda, honouring their memory and reaffirming our commitment to preventing such atrocities in the future.
