BROADENING HORIZONS

MUN (Model United Nations)

On Saturday 4 October, thirteen students from the Third to Upper Sixth Forms represented Algeria, Belgium, and Belarus at the Alleyn’s School Model United Nations Conference. They debated key global issues including security, climate change, and human rights, demonstrating excellent preparation and thoughtful engagement. Delegates also heard from Melinda Bohannon, Director General for Global Issues at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, who spoke about the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. For many, it was their first MUN experience, and all performed with distinction. Congratulations to Commended Delegates Hector, Daire, Noah, and Ava, and Highly Commended Delegates Tom and Neeam.

OPERA CLUB

Pupils were treated to a witty and wonderfully accessible production of Rossini’s La Cenerentola (Cinderella) at the English National Opera, which delighted both seasoned opera-goers and newcomers alike. From a literary perspective, the updated libretto highlighted the sharp humour and charm of Rossini’s setting, while musically, the sparkling melodies and inventive scoring offered memorable moments. There was a shared sense of excitement in capturing the traditional group photo, this time with the iconic façade of the London Coliseum fully visible, following renovations. It was a memorable evening of music and shared appreciation for the arts.

STEM CLUB

Last week, pupils from the Second, Third, and Fourth Forms took part in an exciting STEM enrichment trip to the Wycombe Swan Theatre to see Astronauts: The Quest to Explore Space. The event featured a captivating talk by astronaut Tim Peake, who explored humanity’s journey into space, from the pioneering days of the Wright brothers, to launching the International Space Station into orbit, and looking ahead to the future of Moon and Mars settlements.

MOCO MUSEUM

Over 20 Fourth and Fifth Form Art students had the opportunity to visit the Modern Contemporary Museum in Marble Arch, an independent museum known for its dynamic collection of modern, contemporary, and street art. The museum, unique in offering interactive experiences with iconic works by artists such as Jeff Koons, Banksy, and others, provided an inspiring and immersive visit. Students returned creatively energised and full of new ideas for their own artistic practice.
