We were visited by Rachel Wolf who co-authored the Conservative manifest for 2019, which was conveniently summed by Dominic Cummings as ‘Get Brexit Done.’
She explored the process of writing, engagement with people (through focus groups etc.) to find out how people actually feel about the country and how it links to the strategy of winning elections. She offered candid insights into working with the Conservative leadership team at Number 10 and promoted an honest reflection on the current state of the Conservative Party, the causes of disillusionment with politics and national and global events can derail pledges originally made in earnest.
Thus, the students really went beyond their A Level syllabus as the talk uncovered how politicians try to understand people’s genuine feelings and how they try to respond to them through policy and messaging.
