Since joining in Third Form as a budding Classicist, I have been spoilt by the endless opportunities available within the Classics Department for both Latin and Ancient Greek. From lectures by renowned Classicists to being given the platform to present my own thoughts and insights on topics of my choice.
Prior to my Classics journey, I had not fully appreciated how informed our modern societal mores and values stem from this period of history. In studying the literature and people of this fascinating era, the number of historical parallels with modern society is both incredibly relevant and humbling and so many of the questions asked today have already been articulated and addressed by the towering figures of this bygone age. In the famous words of Winston Churchill, himself a noted Classics scholar, “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it”.
The Classics Department at St Albans School comprises many dedicated and passionate teachers who are keen to impart their love of the subject and answer any questions we might have.
Unfortunately the Classics trip to Pompeii was cancelled due to COVID, but rest assured I have successfully convinced my parents to take me there next summer!
