My name is Dasha, and I am a student in the Lower Sixth Form. Economics is one of my A Level subjects, which I really enjoy and would recommend to everyone who wants to know more about how human choices work, and what impacts they have on the global market. At St Albans School students can study this subject at both GCSE and A Level, however, there is absolutely no problem if you start reading it in Sixth Form.
Economics at St Albans School gives students the opportunity to build their viewpoints making them reasoned, expanded and evaluated. The idea of being taught by teachers of different ages and experiences is quite beneficial as this helps you to consolidate your knowledge, looking at topics from various perspectives. In this way, this social science showed me that there is no right or wrong answer and that you need to think out of the box to back up your statements and to understand the arguments of other people. The Economics Department always makes sure it stays current by offering students extra sources of information, trips abroad, talks, and opportunities to present independent research at “The Economics Society” every Monday.
The School motivates students to achieve the highest results they are capable of in their exams. We often practise answering tricky questions, draw diagrams on whiteboards, and read as many informative articles about crucial events such as inflation, recession, war, innovations and other interesting topics being discussed in worldwide news. There are always newspapers in the common room for us to read.
Speaking of upcoming events in the life of young economists, the Lower Sixth Formers are highly anticipating their upcoming trip to Prague, where we will visit the Škoda Car Factory, the Parliament of the Czech Republic, and the Museum of Communism.
