Enrichment at Kew Gardens, Science Live! and the Hylocomian Society Theatre Trip
Kew Gardens
Second Form travelled to Kew Gardens to learn about Rainforest Ecosystems. The students were introduced to fieldwork techniques during a walk around the Royal Botanical Gardens and enjoyed a lesson in Kew's tropical Palm House, learning about plant adaptations and resources from the Tropical Rainforests. During the trip they also compared temperate and tropical climates.
GCSE Science Live!
Pupils enjoyed hearing from leading researchers about their work in different areas, learning about science beyond the curriculum, as well as hearing first-hand advice from an examiner. Speakers at the event included Professor Lord Robert Winston, a doctor specialising in fertility and presenter of the BBC’s Child of our Time, and Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock, space scientist and presenter of the BBC programme The Sky At Night.
Hylocomian Trip National Theatre
Students travelled to the National Theatre to watch a modern adaptation of Phaedra by Simon Stone after Euripides. The play tells the story of Helen who, after years of focussing on her political career, turns her attention to her personal life. The reappearance of a figure from her past shakes the foundations of her house and the beliefs that have underpinned her power.
The Merchant of Venice
The Fourth Form enjoyed an evening at the Watford Palace Theatre last week seeing an astounding adaptation of Shakespeare’s disturbing ‘The Merchant of Venice’, set in 1936. The boys have been discussing it enthusiastically in their English lessons.
